GLO Marine provided engineering and class approval support for the conversion of a platform supply vessel to DNV-GL SPS (Special Personnel on board) class notation.
The vessel was repurposed from subsea support operations to general renewable energy support, with a requirement to accommodate up to 40 additional personnel in temporary living quarters. The primary engineering constraint was managing the vessel's stability under the added topside weight. The conversion also required modification of onboard systems, with particular attention to life-saving and personnel safety systems.
SPS class notation imposes stability and life-saving requirements beyond those applicable under standard offshore vessel codes. Meeting these requirements on an existing hull, rather than a newbuild, adds constraints not present in new construction.
Structural modifications to accommodate the new module affected vent placement and flooding boundaries, requiring coordinated input from mechanical and stability engineering disciplines. This coordination was necessary to control cost and schedule impact, including extended docking time and any resulting reduction in cargo capacity.
