Job summary

GLO Marine is looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer with strong marine/offshore experience and specialist expertise in Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), motor and drive systems, and electrical power distribution.

The role will strengthen our growing electrical engineering capabilities and support vessel upgrade and decarbonisation projects, including VFD-driven systems, shore power, BESS and hybrid power solutions, as well as electrical integration activities within the GLO Technology Centre.


Key Responsibilities
  • Lead electrical engineering activities for marine, offshore, and packaged equipment projects.
  • Develop and review electrical system designs including: 
    • LV and MV power distribution
    • Switchboards and MCCs
    • LV and MV VFD / variable-speed drive systems
    • Electric motors and motor starting systems
    • Transformers
    • UPS and DC systems
    • Protection and control systems
    • Earthing and bonding
    • Cable sizing and routing
    • Electrical interfaces with automation and control systems
  • Specify, select and engineer LV and MV VFD systems, including drive sizing, motor compatibility, control philosophy, braking requirements, harmonic mitigation, EMC considerations, motor cable requirements, input/output filtering and cooling requirements.
  • Troubleshoot VFD, motor and electrical control issues during integration, FAT, SAT and commissioning.
  • Review OEM and vendor technical proposals and ensure equipment is suitable for the required marine/offshore application.
  • Prepare and review electrical specifications, datasheets, single-line diagrams, schematics, load schedules, cable schedules, I/O requirements and technical documentation.
  • Undertake or review electrical calculations and power system studies including load flow, short-circuit, voltage drop, protection coordination/selectivity, cable sizing, motor starting and harmonic distortion assessments.
  • Support integration of electrical systems into skids, e-houses, process packages and marine systems.
  • Provide electrical engineering input into compressor, pump, fan, winch and other motor-driven machinery packages.
  • Assess existing vessel electrical installations and develop modification and retrofit solutions, including interface definition and integration with existing systems.
  • Perform or support onboard electrical surveys to verify existing installations, available electrical capacity, cable routes, interfaces and installation constraints.
  • Interface with mechanical, process, automation, instrumentation and project engineering disciplines.
  • Provide technical support to procurement and participate in technical bid evaluations and vendor technical clarifications.
  • Review vendor drawings, calculations and documentation.
  • Develop and review FAT procedures and, where required, lead or participate in FAT, SAT and commissioning activities.
  • Support troubleshooting and fault-finding onboard vessels, in workshops and at customer facilities.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant marine classification rules, statutory requirements and international electrical standards.
  • Support technical interfaces with classification societies, including technical submissions and resolution of electrical comments where required.
  • Provide technical support during tendering, including scope definition, equipment selection, engineering estimates, technical risk assessment and technical clarifications.
  • Mentor junior electrical engineers and technicians as the engineering team develops.

Requirements

VFD Expertise – Essential


The successful candidate must demonstrate significant hands-on engineering experience with Variable Frequency Drive systems, covering both system design and practical application, ideally from major manufacturers such as ABB, Siemens, Danfoss, Schneider Electric, Rockwell, or equivalent.


Experience should include:

  • VFD sizing and selection
  • LV drive systems, with experience or strong technical understanding of MV drive systems
  • VFD/motor matching
  • Induction and permanent-magnet motors
  • Constant and variable torque applications
  • Pump, fan, compressor, winch and other motor-driven machinery applications
  • Drive parameterisation and commissioning
  • Harmonics and harmonic mitigation
  • Active front end / regenerative drives
  • EMC and electrical noise management
  • Motor cable length and filtering requirements
  • Understanding of dU/dt, common-mode voltage, motor insulation stress and bearing-current effects associated with VFD applications
  • Protection and interlocking
  • Understanding of drive safety functions, including Safe Torque Off (STO), and associated machinery safety interfaces
  • PLC/VFD integration and industrial communications, including Profinet, Profibus, Modbus RTU/TCP, EtherNet/IP or equivalent protocols
  • Fault diagnosis and troubleshooting
  • FAT, SAT and commissioning of drive systems
  • Knowledge of applicable VFD standards, particularly the IEC 61800 series

Experience with modern LV and MV VFD platforms from manufacturers such as ABB, Siemens, Danfoss, Schneider Electric, Rockwell or equivalent would be particularly valuable.

Marine / Offshore Experience – Essential


Candidates should have previous experience within one or more of the following:

  • Commercial vessels, offshore vessels, FPSOs / offshore production facilities, drilling rigs, shipyards
  • Marine electrical system integrators, marine electrification, marine electrical retrofit projects
  • Offshore equipment manufacturers, offshore process/package equipment, propulsion or thruster systems

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Degree/HND or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering
  • Typically 8+ years' electrical engineering experience
  • Strong marine/offshore electrical engineering background
  • Demonstrable specialist experience with VFD systems
  • Strong understanding of LV electrical distribution and associated protection systems
  • Experience with motors, MCCs and switchboards and electrical drive systems
  • Ability to read and develop electrical single-line diagrams and schematics
  • Experience with electrical calculations, power system studies, protection coordination and equipment selection
  • FAT, SAT and commissioning experience
  • Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting capability
  • Experience working directly with OEMs, suppliers and customers
  • Ability to interpret and apply relevant electrical standards, marine classification requirements and manufacturer documentation
  • Good written and spoken English.


Highly desirable:

  • Experience with MV electrical systems, including MV distribution, switchgear, protection, transformers and associated cable systems
  • Experience with MV VFD / drive systems
  • Marine propulsion and thruster drives
  • Compressor, pump, fan, winch and other motor-driven machinery packages
  • E-house / electrical room integration
  • Shore power / Alternative Maritime Power systems

  • Experience with electrical power system analysis software such as ETAP, Ecodial or equivalent

Personal Profile

We are looking for someone practical as well as technically strong. This is not intended to be a purely office-based design role.

The successful candidate should be comfortable moving between engineering, onboard surveys, workshop integration, FAT, SAT, and vessel/site commissioning, and should be capable of taking ownership of electrical problems and driving them through to resolution.

They should be commercially aware, comfortable dealing directly with customers, OEMs, and suppliers, and capable of serving as the senior electrical authority on multidisciplinary projects.


What Success Looks Like

The Senior Electrical Engineer will help GLO Marine build a strong internal capability in marine electrification, drive systems, power systems engineering, and electrical integration, reducing reliance on external engineering support and enabling the company to take greater ownership of technically complex electrical and packaged-system projects.

They will play a key role in developing the electrical engineering capability required to support GLO Marine's expanding work in marine electrification, VFD-driven equipment, e-houses, process packages, compression systems,  shore power, BESS/hybrid systems, and OEM integration projects.
